A disabled bath tub or also know as walk in baths enable those with disability or mobility problems to bath in comfort, which may be difficult or impossible in a traditional bath. The main issue of using a traditional bath is the entering and exiting, which requires the user to step over the high side of the bath (approximately 60 cm). When exiting the bath, not only does the user have to step over the side but also contend with a potentially slippery surface inside the bath.
Disabled bathtubs take two main forms:
Walk in baths – these baths are fitted with doors which removes the need to step over the side of a normal bath. The user opens the door to enter, fills the bath, when finished drains the water and exits the bath.
Hoist system – This system removes the need to step into the bath by lifting the user over the side and gently lowering into the bath. There are various systems available from simple stand alone hoists to fully integrated bath and hoists models.
